Isn't interesting that heather gray is more or less the official color of work out gear, especially T-shirts?

Why heather gray? (which was also the color of the Army's work out uniform)

I mean, there are lots of work out clothing items that are black, but wearing a black T-shirt doesn't necessarily read: Work out! Yet...can you wear anything heather gray without it looking like work out clothes?

Who decided heather gay and why has it stuck?

On a related note, boxing classes are kicking my butt. And I like it.

Heather gray was the color of PE shirts in at least two different schools I went to. I vaguely assumed it was because it was a nice generic color that wouldn't bleed or show dirt all that easily as the shirts inevitably got more and more filthy and rewashed. I suppose a well-washed black shirt wouldn't bleed either, but it would also be a lot hotter for running around in the sun.

I imagine both would be up to Heather.

Funny, I'd never thought about that before, but you're absolutely right. I prefer charcoal heather myself. Stylish. Slimming.

here are the reasons i can think of (organized virgo-style):
a) doesn't show dirt (unlike white)
b) doesn't get see-through when it gets wet/you sweat on it (unlike white)
c) not too hot in the sun (unlike black)

i used to have a whole collection of heather gray t-shirts that i used for basketball and softball practice. wish i had more now. i think they're sexy.

d) it's slimming (unlike white) - okay, that one is less convincing

All of the points are true...but why heather gray and not say...that "natural" color that is sort of beige...or a sky blue...or some other light color?

I love heather gray...it just make me sad I can't wear heather gray T-shirts without looking like I'm on my way to the gym.

If I had to guess, I'd suspect that the decision was made at a time and place where it was cheaper to get that gray than any other practical color (White and Black being out for reasons discussed by others above...). Whether this was related to dying technologies or simple economies of scale, I couldn't hazard to guess, but in the absence of other explanations, I'll always bet that people cheaped out.

Maybe that color dye is cheapest? I dunno. You could start a new trend. I would certainly be happy to continue it up in NorCal.

I have no heather grey workout clothes. i find cotton just doesn't do a body justice when you are running or on a treadmill and the water just sticks to your body because the cotton can not remove the material. that's why i use a synthetic and think everyone should be on that bandwagon.

just my 2 cents tho.

By the way, I'm sorry about your trainer. That is sad. My gym closed down, that was sad too.

Interestingly, the work shirt that I am wearing right now, as with most of my field shirts that I intend to wear while hot/sweaty, is a heather gray poly-blend.

But I have a slightly different reason for choosing it. Whenever I go into Target to buy more work shirts, I inevitably head for the women's athletic section, where my color options are as follows: 1. Pink 2. Lime green 3. Neon orange, and 4. Sky blue -- all of which are colors I wouldn't deign wear on a job site (too feminine), much less work out in (too attention-grabbing). When I'm gettin hot and sweaty, I want a color I will be more or less invisible in, so heather grey it is.
