Quick Battlestar Notes
Mar. 25th, 2006 04:46 pmMost of them do the salutes very well--Edward James Olmos is outstanding in his salutes. They have so many details of military life well done. From who raises the salute and who drops first. From standing up whenever the commanding officer enters the room. To having the majority of the military people look young enough to actually be military people.
But they do one thing that drives me crazy. Really crazy. And they are not the only show that has done this. Too many shows do this.
For once and for all:
Enlisted people are not addressed as Sir. Sergeants are called Sergeant, not sir. Mostly they are good at this...Specialists called Specialist, the Chief being called chief...but the master at arms was a Sergeant and they called her Sir...
which brings me to my second and biggest pet peeve--
Female officers are NOT called sir. They are called Ma'am. Ma'am. Ma'am.
For officers, it is Sir/Ma'am.
For Warrant Officers it is Mr/Ms
For enlisted it is by rank.
Ma'am...people!
There are lots of female officers, and they have a form of address...it is Ma'am. You never call your female officers Sir--unless you want to do lots of push-ups.
