I got this from the LJ of evildoctorganymede on my friends list.

Turns out the Channel Island of Sark is finally going to transition to Democracy after 450 years of feudalism. Reading between the lines, it further looks like the government is only doing so because of pressure from the EU.

This further supports my idea that you can have any sort of governmental system and make it work if your population is small enough.

Reminds me of Catalina, different Channel. They get away with stuff out there that would never fly with the majority of Americans.

They're really devoted to maintaining their environmental purity so there is a limit number of vehicles allowed on the island and I think they have very strict restrictions on things like "road time" for gas vehicles. Most of the population goes around in electric golf carts. Imagine! Americans without their SUVs! There's other stuff, like improvement restrictions, restrictions on new construction, etc, I think, I'm not an expert.

The Bush administration is threatened by individual states making their own emissions laws, but since Catalina is small enough they can get away with whatever they want. No one's watching.
